There will Never…Be a Sale…Like This…Again. until tomorrow.

December 30th, 2008

Tigerdirect has to be the online equivalent to the Haynes furniture store, or maybe the Dump, the dump, the dump dump dump. That place is probably even worse though, because they run local ads that make you think they’re a small town shop that’s only open on sundays, but it’s the same thing in every city they have one. But I have to run now, because Tigerdirect is having an after christmas sale now, i’m sure i’ll never find deals like these ever again. We need to rethink the legal definition of a sale so I can stop getting bombarded with all the sale Sale SALE SALE! crap.

Will the Recession Kill World wide web 2.0?

December 22nd, 2008

The net has been running fast and loose for quite a while now, and hasn’t seen large companies tank since the bubble of the 1990’s. The increment of these advertising-supported “Web 2.0″.” companies has propelled on-line publicizing to twenty-one billion dollars, up from six billion between ‘02 and ‘07. But they pricked the bubble in 2001. What will happen this time around?  I’m not so sure the “recession” has caught up with the web yet.  Only time will tell.

LEDs, Smarting Lighting Could Preserve Trillions, Spark Conception

December 22nd, 2008

LED LEDs Light Emitting DiodesA revolution is in the means as we sort out our reality and it is close at hand, well that’s not exactly how they described it, but I like my version better than the newspaper article published this week. Innovations in photonics and unanimous firing will eventually lead to trillions of dollars in price savings, along with a reducing sum for the department of energy to get off homes and businesses around the globe.  Ok, now it’s devil’s advocate time. This isn’t a new idea.  LED’s have been cheap for quite awhile now.  I dunno about this smart lighting bit.  I think people get stuck in their ways and will use their old tried-and-true technology until you pry it from their cold dead hands.

Digg Developing Democratic Ad To Generate

December 22nd, 2008

gold digger digg diggingDigg is experimenting with a self service advertisement scheme that will be ever-so-slightly similar to Google Adwords. It will enter advertisements into the Digg news show. Where those ads end up, and how great a click pays, well…, per click, would be be based on substance abuser feedback and votes. Basically Digg members are crackheads (except for me) and they need to buy stuff and click links. Maybe digg is going broke? Yeah right.

Deny access to wp-admin from everyone but yourself

December 6th, 2008

Find the wp-admin directory of your site and put a .htaccess file in there.  Create it as root and just put 3 lines in it and you’re done.

order deny,allow
deny from all
allow from 72.14.205.100

Change 72.14.205.100 to your ip address. If you’re behind a router of some time, go to a website that tells you what ip you’re browsing from, like whatismyip.com and put the ip address it says you’re coming from in there.  If your ip craptastic-ly changes a lot, try just 3 octets, leaving the last one out.  For example, if your ip is 72.14.205.100 today, you could make the last line just:

allow from 72.14.205

Doing it this way allows 253 other ip’s besides yours to access that folder at any given time, but that’s an improvement from a theoretical 4,294,967,295 others for ipv4 right?

Stop SELinux from blocking flash using iced-tea firefox plugin

December 6th, 2008

If you see this message when firefox tries to load flash content:

  1. SELinux is preventing the npviewer.bin from using potentially mislabeled files (/home/admica/.icedteaplugin/icedtea-plugin-to-appletviewer).
Source Context: unconfined_u:unconfined_r:nsplugin_t:s0
Target Context: unconfined_u:object_r:user_home_t:s0
Target Objects: /home/admica/.icedteaplugin/icedtea-plugin-to-appletviewer
Source: npviewer.bin
Source Path: /usr/lib64/nspluginwrapper/npviewer.binPort:<Unknown>
Host: somehost
Source RPM Packages: nspluginwrapper-1.1.2-4.fc10
Policy RPM: selinux-policy-3.5.13-26.fc10
Selinux Enabled: True
Policy Type: targetedMLS
Enabled: True
Enforcing Mode: Enforcing
Plugin Name: home_tmp_bad_labels

Then do this:  (replace with your home dir)

$ restorecon -v ‘/home/admica/.icedteaplugin/icedtea-plugin-to-appletviewer’

restorecon reset /home/admica/.icedteaplugin/icedtea-plugin-to-appletviewer context unconfined_u:object_r:user_home_t:s0->system_u:object_r:nsplugin_home_t:s0

and you should get that response and it should work the next time you try as long as you’ve got the right plugin association and the file you’re trying to load really is flash!

Top 5 reasons why Gears of War sucks

November 21st, 2008

First off, don’t be afraid of insane mode.  It just means you shoot from a little further back than normal most of the time and don’t bother trying to get up close to chainsaw anyone.  So you’re left with the multiplayer and the horde.  The horde mode really is the shining star here, but it’s too bad this is where things also began to fall apart.

Top 5 reasons why Gears of War 2 sucks

  1. It will take forever to form groups on xbox live.  And when you see your group fill up and you think it’s about to start, don’t count your chickens yet.  It will probably reset and start trying to find players all over again.  When you’ve played a full round of multiplayer in public xbox live and the round is finishes, you will get kicked out to the main screen and have to start matchmaking all over again.  The only save here is that if you’re in a party with friends, at least your group will stay together, but you’ll still have to wait forever to find another group to play against!
  2. If you join a multiplayer or horde match using public xbox live, you’ll start from wave one with no choice.  If, at any time in the middle of playing, someone leaves the match, a new person can’t join.  So you’re basically screwed.  This has a much worse effect in multiplayer.  If a player or two on your team leaves, too bad so sad.  Your team is probably going to lose.  It won’t balance the teams between matches, or let a new person join in the middle of a fight, a la call of duty style.
  3. The whole roll up on someone and blast them with a shotgun to the face trick from the first Gears of War hasn’t been fixed.  So forget the lancer or the rifle.  The shotgun is your best choice from your starting arsenal in multiplayer.  If you can get your hands on a bow or boomshot, by all means take it.  But it’s just too bad there are no modes where people get different guns, or where everyone only gets a specific gun.  It would have been nice to have a pistol+sniper battle with no machine guns allowed.
  4. Oooo, check out my gold lancer or gold rifle.  woop-dee-doo.  How about different models of each type of gun or a few more choices?  Sure there’s three different pistols, but there’s only 1 rifle, 1 lancer, 1 bow, 1 boomshot, and 1sniper rifle.  While the weapon types vary tremendously, the selection is rather limited.
  5. Be prepared to get stuck taking cover, or going into cover facing the wrong way.  It’s just too bad that Geow2 is basically Geow1 all over again with new maps and a few new guns!

And my bonus gripe:  In the campaign mode, you’ll find yourself running around as a group of 4, sometimes splitting into 2 and 2.  Why couldn’t they have made it FOUR PLAYER CO-OP?!  Tweak the story a little here and there and wam, it would have been great.  I give this game a 7 out of 10.  And no, i’m not paid to rate this game at all.  After the initial wow factor wears off, you’re left with just “meh”.  Screw this, i’m going back to Call of Duty 4…
